You are probably looking forward to a couple of weeks of well-deserved rest in the sun, and the last thing you want to be worrying about it your home. So here are a few things you can do to make your home safer whilst you are away, so you can really enjoy your holiday.
- It may sound simple, but ensure that all windows and door are closed and locked securely. All windows that are on the ground floor or have easy access should be fitted with locks.
- If you have a burglar alarm make sure it’s set.
- Use timer switches for lights, TVs and radios to come on and off at different times in different rooms.
- Cancel the milk and papers if you have them delivered.
- Where possible, give a trusted neighbour the keys to your house, and ask them to put your post in a safe place and to open and close different curtains at different times. Make sure your neighbour does not write your address, or even your house number, on the keys.
- Hide or lock away valuables, such as jewellery or silver. Few burglars are professionals and won't want to waste time searching.
- Be careful of whom you inform of your holiday plans.
- And last but not least: do not leave any keys in the flower pot, under the mat or in the letterbox. However safe you think your hiding place is, someone will find it.
